Each week Titus' class is learning a new letter. This week has been F. For the phonics lesson yesterday the teacher told the kids the objective was to find the F words 'fish' and 'frogs.' Mrs R. said Titus raised his hand and said, "I have an objective." As though he were a little lawyer raising his hand to "object." She had told me the week before she thinks Titus would make an incredible lawyer as he is always talking and asking questions. I laughed when she told me that because Steve had just said the week before that same thing about Titus being a lawyer. His teacher went on to tell me that Titus said, "I found one of your objectives. A frog." She gave him the "Listening Ears Award." He was so proud of himself that day because he had also gotten a green star from Coach (his gym teacher) for running twice around the track...half a mile! Steve has said several times someone at the park has commented on how fast Titus runs.
It's good for us all when Titus has a great day like that...it doesn't happen every day. Some days when I pick him up, I will hear that he was defiant, saying "no" to his teacher or hiding behind the art easel when it's time to line up.
The elementary school had parent-teacher conferences at the end of October. Steve was teaching so I went alone. Mrs. Ramroopsingh opened the conference by holding hands and praying the most beautiful prayer. For Titus, praising God for bringing us back to CCA. She told me that Titus talks about the forest in Pennsylvania. She said as they were learning about the seasons, Titus told the kids about the leaves falling and the snow. She was surprised at how much he remembered. None of the other kids in his class have experienced the seasons. It made me sad to know that he remembers it. And that he won't experience that so much anymore.
I've been starting to have more of those moments of missing. It comes mostly when I hear Titus talk about it. Or about the people we left behind. He does remember a lot. He calls our last house the "hot house." When we moved it was in the middle of a PA heat wave. In our packing, I returned the AC unit that we borrowed from friends and the house was unbearable. We stayed with my parents the last few days living there. We must've told Titus was couldn't stay in our house because it was too hot.
We're doing well here. But there occasionally comes the feelings of sadness. They creep in at times when Titus is playing with cars and shows me Adrienne's car and uncle Ray's pickup truck. Or last week when he looked out my bedroom window and saw a car that he said is "like Grammy's car, but not Grammy's because she is so far away." Yesterday he found a firecracker and said, "like we did at the hot house."
